Ashtanga Primary Series:
Ashtanga consists of a series of fixed postures that are linked together with Vinyasa (breath & movement system). The sheer number of Vinyasa performed in a class combined with Ujayii pranayama (deep chest breathing) help students build strength and increase endurance and metabolism.
There are three basic “series”: Primary, Intermediate and Advanced (There are also the Advanced series: A, B, C & D). Class typically runs 90-120 minutes in the U.S. starting with ten sun salutations (surya namaskara A & B) and ending with shoulder stand (sarvangasana), headstand (shirshasana) and final relaxation (savasana).
The Primary Series include a lot of Vinyasa in order to build the strength needed in the Second and Advanced series (lots of arm balancing poses). All Ashtanga students are encouraged to mediate on the sound of their own breath (ujayii pranayama) to increase internal awareness.
